Donderstenen Dragons that Read Event

Dragons That Read: Worlds Beyond the Page is a fantasy and science fiction–themed reading event at the Dondersteen in Hengelo for ages 9 and up. Participants gather to read a selected story excerpt aloud together, taking turns if they wish, in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The focus is on stories with rich world building and memorable characters, such as magical lands, futuristic worlds, and imaginative creatures. After reading, the group discusses how the author creates the setting, including rules, cultures, and unique details that make the world feel real. Attendees also explore character creation by talking about motivations, strengths, flaws, and what makes certain heroes or villains stand out. A short creative activity invites participants to invent their own character to share with the group. The event ends with a book-share circle where readers recommend favorite fantasy or sci-fi stories, connecting reading with the imaginative spirit of games and storytelling.
