Frequently asked Questions and Facts about DtR
Accessibility questions
We understand that language can be a barrier to participation. Our book clubs are primarily conducted in Dutch or English, as we are based in the Twente region. However, we are committed to making our community accessible to everyone. If you have difficulty with Dutch or English, please contact us, and we can discuss options such as:
- Providing reading materials in your preferred language when available
- Pairing you with a reading buddy who can help with translation
- Organizing multilingual discussion groups where participants can share in their preferred language
We believe stories transcend language barriers, and we're happy to work with you to find a solution that works.
We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all members of our community. We welcome participants with disabilities and will work with you to ensure you can fully participate in our book clubs. Please reach out to us before signing up so we can discuss your specific needs and how we can best accommodate them. Whether you need:
- Sign language interpretation
- Wheelchair accessible venues
- Materials in alternative formats
- Additional support during discussions
- Or any other accommodations
We're here to help make your book club experience enjoyable and accessible.
Yes! We understand that reading small print can be challenging. Many of the books we read are available in large print editions. When you sign up, please let us know if you need large print books, and we'll do our best to ensure the selected titles are available in that format. We can also recommend e-readers with adjustable font sizes, or we can help you access digital versions that allow you to customize the text size to your comfort level.
We warmly welcome participants who prefer or need to engage through audio. Many of our selected books are available as audiobooks, and we encourage all members to participate in discussions regardless of how they've experienced the book. For getting to live events, we can help arrange:
- Transportation assistance or carpooling with other members
- Detailed directions and venue accessibility information
- A buddy system where another member can guide you to and from events
- Information about public transportation options to our venues
Please contact us when you sign up, and we'll work together to ensure you can attend and fully participate in our in-person gatherings.
Absolutely! We recognize that audiobooks are an excellent way to experience literature, and many of our selected titles are available in audio format. We encourage members to choose the format that works best for them—whether that's print, e-book, large print, or audiobook. Our discussions focus on the story, characters, and themes, not on how you accessed the book. If you need help finding audiobook versions of our selected titles, our coordinators can provide recommendations and links to audiobook services.
Yes, we encourage you to request any accommodations you need. Our goal is to make our book clubs accessible and enjoyable for everyone. When you sign up, there's a section where you can note any accommodations you might need. You can also contact us directly at any time to discuss your specific requirements. We'll work with you to ensure your needs are met, whether that's related to:
- Physical accessibility
- Sensory accommodations
- Language support
- Learning differences
- Or any other needs you might have
We make every effort to ensure our venues are wheelchair accessible. All our regular meeting locations in Twente are selected with accessibility in mind, including wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and meeting spaces. If you have specific accessibility concerns or requirements, please let us know when you sign up, and we can confirm the accessibility features of your group's meeting location. We're also happy to discuss alternative arrangements if needed.
Locality questions
Yes, our in-person events are currently held in the Twente region of the Netherlands. We have multiple meeting locations throughout Twente to make it convenient for members in different areas. However, we also offer online participation options for those who cannot attend in person or prefer virtual meetings. If you're interested in starting a group in another region, we'd love to hear from you—we're always looking to expand our community!
Some are and some are not. We strive for accessibility but not all locations can support a solid online interaction. We understand that not everyone can attend in-person events, whether due to distance, scheduling, health, or personal preference. We will offer online book club sessions via video conferencing for many of our groups. When you sign up, you can indicate whether you prefer in-person, online, or hybrid participation. Our online sessions maintain the same welcoming, discussion-focused atmosphere as our in-person meetings, and you'll have the opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers from the comfort of your home.
We have meeting locations in several cities and towns throughout Twente, including Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo, and other communities in the region. When you sign up for a group, you'll be able to see the specific meeting location for that group. We try to match members with groups that meet in convenient locations, and we're always working to expand our presence to more communities within Twente. If you don't see a location near you, please let us know—we may be able to start a new group in your area!
While our in-person events are focused on the Twente region, we welcome participants from outside the area to join our online book club sessions. Our online groups are open to anyone, regardless of location. If you're interested in participating but live outside Twente, we encourage you to sign up for one of our online groups. You'll still get the full book club experience, including engaging discussions and a sense of community, all from wherever you are.
Yes! We have multiple groups that meet in different locations throughout Twente. Each group has its own meeting location, which could be a library, community center, café, or other welcoming venue. When you browse available groups during sign-up, you'll see the meeting location for each group. This allows you to choose a group that meets at a convenient location for you. We also have groups that meet entirely online, so location isn't a factor for those.
Practicality questions
Getting started is easy! You can sign up directly on our website by visiting the "Join a Book Club" page. There, you'll find information about all available groups, including meeting times, locations, and current book selections. Simply choose a group that interests you and click "Sign Up." You'll be asked to provide some basic information and can indicate any preferences or accommodations you might need. If you have questions before signing up, feel free to contact us—we're happy to help you find the perfect group!
When you sign up, you're joining a specific book club group. Each group:
- Reads one book per month (or per cycle, depending on the group)
- Meets regularly to discuss the book (usually monthly)
- Has a facilitator who guides discussions
- Includes a diverse group of fellow book lovers
You'll receive information about the current book selection, meeting dates and times, and how to access discussion materials. Some groups focus on specific genres (mystery, fantasy, contemporary fiction, etc.), while others read a variety of books. You can choose a group that matches your reading interests.
Yes, you're welcome to join multiple groups if you'd like! Many of our members participate in more than one book club, especially if they're interested in different genres or want to read more books. There's no limit to how many groups you can join, as long as you can commit to reading the books and participating in the discussions. Just keep in mind that each group requires time to read the selected book and attend meetings, so make sure you can manage the reading load for all the groups you join.
We understand that life happens, and you might not be able to attend every meeting or finish every book. That's okay! If you know you'll miss a meeting, we'd appreciate it if you let your group facilitator know, but it's not required. You're welcome to attend meetings even if you haven't finished the book—many great discussions happen when people are at different points in their reading. If you find that a group's schedule consistently doesn't work for you, you can always switch to a different group or take a break and rejoin later. Our goal is for this to be enjoyable, not stressful.
Book club participation is meant to be enjoyable and low-pressure. Your main "responsibilities" are:
- Reading the selected books (or as much as you can)
- Participating in discussions when you attend
- Being respectful and inclusive toward other members
- Letting us know if you need to take a break or leave a group
That's it! There are no mandatory assignments, presentations, or other formal responsibilities. Some members enjoy taking turns suggesting books or leading discussions, but that's completely optional. We want this to be a fun, welcoming space for book lovers.
We expect members to:
- Be respectful and inclusive in all interactions
- Participate in discussions in a way that's comfortable for you (some people talk more, some less—both are welcome!)
- Come prepared to engage with the book and other members' perspectives
- Communicate if you have concerns or need accommodations
Beyond that, there are no strict expectations. You don't have to finish every book, attend every meeting, or speak a certain amount. We value diverse perspectives and participation styles. The most important thing is that you feel welcome and enjoy being part of our community.
Our book clubs are designed to be accessible, and participation is free! We don't charge membership fees or require payment to join a group. However, you will need to obtain the books yourself. We recommend:
- Checking your local library (many libraries have book club sets available)
- Using library e-book and audiobook services
- Sharing books with other group members
- Purchasing books if you prefer to own them
Some groups also organize book swaps or have a small collection of shared books. We're committed to keeping participation free so that cost isn't a barrier to joining our community.
While we don't offer discounts directly (since participation is already free), we can help you access books affordably:
- We maintain partnerships with local libraries that often have multiple copies of our selected books
- Many libraries offer free e-book and audiobook lending
- Some groups organize book swaps or have a shared book collection
- We can provide information about secondhand bookstores and online resources for affordable books
If the cost of books is a concern, please reach out to us—we're committed to finding solutions so that everyone can participate regardless of their financial situation.
Since participation in our book clubs is free, there's no payment required! You only need to obtain the books yourself, which you can do through your local library, bookstores, or online retailers. If you're interested in supporting our organization (which helps us provide resources, maintain our website, and expand our programs), we do accept donations, but this is completely optional and not required for participation.
Yes! We offer special programs for schools and educational groups. If you're a teacher or educator interested in having your class participate in a book club, please contact us to discuss options. We can:
- Organize a book club specifically for your class
- Provide age-appropriate book selections
- Offer flexible scheduling to work with your curriculum
- Provide discussion guides and materials
- Arrange for a facilitator to work with your students
We believe book clubs are an excellent way to encourage reading and critical thinking, and we'd love to work with your school or educational organization.
Yes, you're welcome to bring a friend, family member, or guest to book club meetings! We just ask that you let your group facilitator know in advance if you're bringing someone, especially for the first time, so we can make sure there's space and prepare a warm welcome. Guests are welcome to participate in discussions even if they haven't read the book—sometimes fresh perspectives make for the best conversations. If your guest decides they'd like to join the group permanently, they can sign up through our website.
We aim to keep groups at a size that allows everyone to participate comfortably in discussions, usually between 4 -12 members. If a group grows too large, we'll work with members to split it into two groups, often based on preferences like meeting time, location, or reading interests. If a group becomes too small (fewer than 2 - 3 active members), we may suggest merging with another similar group or transitioning to a hybrid format that combines in-person and online participants. We always communicate these changes well in advance and work with members to ensure a smooth transition. Our goal is to maintain active, engaged groups where everyone feels they can participate.
Many of our groups enjoy sharing snacks during meetings! You're welcome to bring snacks to share, and we encourage it as a way to create a welcoming, social atmosphere. We ask that you:
- Consider any dietary restrictions or allergies (you can check with your group facilitator)
- Bring items that are easy to share and not too messy
- Be mindful of the venue's policies (some locations may have restrictions)
- Consider bringing a variety of options if possible
Common snacks include cookies, fruit, nuts, chips, or other finger foods. Some groups even take turns bringing snacks, which can be a fun way to share favorite treats and learn about different foods. If you have questions about what to bring, ask your group facilitator or other members!
Most of our groups meet once per month, typically to discuss one book. However, meeting frequency can vary by group:
- Some groups meet every 4-6 weeks to allow more reading time
- Some groups meet twice per month if they're reading shorter books or want more frequent discussions
- Online groups sometimes have more flexible scheduling
When you sign up for a group, you'll see the specific meeting schedule. Meeting dates are usually set at the beginning of each reading cycle, and you'll receive reminders before each meeting. If a group's schedule doesn't work for you, you can always switch to a different group with a schedule that better fits your availability.
We have book clubs for various age groups:
- Children's book clubs (elementary school age)
- Young adult book clubs (teenagers)
- Adult book clubs (18+)
- Intergenerational groups (all ages welcome)
When you browse available groups, you'll see the target age range for each group. Some groups are very specific about age ranges to ensure age-appropriate content and discussions, while others welcome participants of all ages. If you're not sure which group is right for you or your child, feel free to contact us for recommendations.
Book selection varies by group, but most groups use one of these approaches:
- Group voting: Members suggest books and vote on what to read next
- Rotating selection: Members take turns choosing books
- Facilitator selection: The group facilitator selects books, often with input from members
- Theme-based: Groups focus on specific themes, genres, or authors
When you join a group, you'll learn about that group's selection process. Many groups also consider factors like:
- Book availability (especially at libraries)
- Length and reading time
- Diversity of authors and perspectives
- Mix of genres and styles
We encourage groups to select books that are accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking.
Absolutely! We encourage members to suggest books. Most groups have a process for book suggestions—some collect suggestions and vote on them, others take turns choosing. Even if your group has a specific selection process, your facilitator will let you know how to submit suggestions. We love when members share books they're passionate about, and many of our best discussions come from books that members have recommended. Don't be shy about suggesting books—your enthusiasm for a book often makes for the most engaging discussions!
That's completely fine! You're still welcome to attend the meeting and participate in the discussion. Many people attend meetings even if they haven't finished the book, and it often leads to interesting conversations about:
- Predictions about what will happen next
- Reactions to the parts you have read
- Questions about parts you haven't reached yet
- General thoughts about the author's style or themes
We just ask that you be mindful of spoilers—if you've read ahead or know how the book ends, be considerate of others who haven't finished. Some groups even have a "no spoilers" rule for the first part of the discussion, then open it up to full spoilers later. The goal is to have engaging discussions, not to make anyone feel excluded for their reading pace.
No, there's no minimum commitment period. You can join a group, try it out, and leave whenever you need to. We understand that circumstances change, interests evolve, and schedules shift. If you find that a group isn't the right fit, you're free to try a different group or take a break. Some members participate for years, while others join for just a few months—both are welcome. The only thing we ask is that you let your group facilitator know if you're leaving so we can keep our records up to date. You're always welcome to come back if you change your mind.
